Litter box training...
All of the puppies and females in my Puggy Pug World are litter box trained. I start this at 4 weeks, or the day puppies start trying to eat wet food. Our litter boxes are filled with wood pellets, mine are marketed as horse bedding. Pugs can be picky about cold and or wet grass, and here in the North West we have a lot of those days. I find that litter boxes provide an OK place to go in the house. Keeping these litter boxes clean is essential. Pups can contract disease from dirty litter boxes, and so can humans. As long as they are kept clean it is a safe and easy way to potty train. If you would prefer your Pug to go outside, this is easily occomplished starting with a litter trained puppy. Putting the box by the door you wish the puppy to use to go out and potty. Putting a bit of the litter outside is the next step. With persistant praise and supervision you will have a potty trained Pug in no time!! I am always here for all questions and help in potty training your puppy!

Three Simple Steps for Success.

Step 1: Getting Set Up
Make sure you set up your litter pan close to an active area of the house, so your puppy will want to use it.

Add enough litter to the bottom of the pan to reach 1''deep.

Allow at least 3 feet of distance between the litter pan and any bedding, food, or water.

Step 2: Teaching Puppy to Use the Pan.
Have a set feeding schedual. Feed your puppy at the same time every day.
After eating, but before playtime, set your puppy in the pan. Encourage your puppy to use the pan. Try to use the same command each time.

Praise your puppy a lot every time they use the pan! Make sure you over do the praise!!

Step 3: Successful Pan Usage
Until they are potty trained completely, when your puppy in left alone it is best to confine them to a gated area or large crate with the litter pan enclosed with them. If the puppy has a choice between the bed or the pan it is most likely they will use the pan.

Praise and reward
Always use possitive rienforcement around the pan, never negative.
Your puppy wants to plaes you, so always praise him with encouraging words in a possitive tone and/or treats when they use the pan correctly.

Place small amount of waste in the litter pan to first so your puppy can learn what the pan is used for.

It is very important to keep the litter pan clean! A puppy will not use a dirty litter pan.
